I just thought I'd post about a possible RR NBA league for next season and wanted to volunteer my services as a possible commish or manager when the time comes. I figure if we start kicking ideas around this summer I bet we could come up with something really cool. I'm all for a deep league with as many managers as possible, with an agreeable live draft of couse. This forum as been pretty slow but I think that's mostly because everybody was pretty much on auto-pilot when this board launched. Till then, good luck in your leagues as you finish up '07-08...

I'm definitely in. Would we want to do roto, points, or H2H? My personal preference is points with roto in a close 2nd. After this past season I couldn't take anymore H2H; I watched a 15 game first place lead and first-round bye crumble into a very early playoff exit because of Marion, Gasol, and company just disappearing when I needed them most.
I had a league this year that was points-based with the following system that I found very entertaining.
Positions (12 teams): G, G, G, G, F, F, F, F, C, C, Util, Util, Util, BN, BN, BN
Stat Modifiers: FGA (-.08), FGM (.25), FTA (-.17), FTM (.25), 3PTM (.08), PTS (.08), REB (.10), AST (.17), ST (.17), BLK (.25), TO (-.17)

I agree with the daily roster part. I've never done a points league before so that'd be kinda cool to get that under my belt.

Daily moves are a given in the jumphook camp. And I kind of like the idea of a points league and am intrigued by the settings that havok mentioned. Normally, I'd lean toward roto but points is basically the same thing so I think we have something cooking here. So maybe we can just eliminate an H2H right here and now???
Also, I like late night drafts but can do a draft anytime on a Sunday. And I like to draft as close to the first day of games as possible.

I love H2H and don't care for Roto. Renewing the competition each week keeps my interest. By Midseason, most Roto Categories are pretty much set and running on autopilot and I tend to lose interest.
That's just me.
I've never done "points" - Well, I haven't done a whole lot.

Make that one vote for H2H.
I play one H2H per year, so I hear you. It definitely benefits streamers and guys who can check their teams every night (me). But I think it only seems natural to play a roto or points in a forum like this where there are so many savvy players just itching for combat.

Like I said, I wouldn't mind trying a points league but frankly I don't really care which style we do. If I may make a humble suggestion, in a 12 team BB roto keeper league I am in, the rosters were like this:
PG,SG,G,SF,PF,F,C,Utilx3,BNx5
I like using specific slots since it brings up the competition a bit with players in specific roles or getting those players who are all over the place in positions and boosting their value. Also, I was wondering what our cap is on teams. 10? 12? 14? More?
havok

With rosters that small I'd prefer at least 12 teams, if not 14. I hate having a jam-packed free agent pool.
My personal preference would be 12-teams with the following roster spots:
PG, SG, G, G
SF, PF, F, F
C, C
UT x3
BN x 4
I think we're all pretty knowledgeable around here and would like this league to reflect that. Let's put our brains/guts to the test and make the waiver wire pretty slim pickings - if nothing else it promotes trading.

If we're lacking for teams as we get closer to the season, I'll throw my hat into the ring. Basketball is probably a distant third for my favorite sports so I'm not the most knowledgeable.

I agree on 12 teams and wouldn't mind trying 3 centers and 3 bench, it could be fun. Active managers, and there should be enough C-eligible players to fill all the rosters. But 2 and 4 is perfectly fine, too.

I went with points since that seems to be the desired format judging by the posts (c'mon, Joe, join up!). Also went with 3 centers, 3 util and 3 bench.
You guys might have to help me tweak the points values, as I've never done a points league before. This should be fun.

So a point for every point scored? What are the points for Blocked Shots, Rebounds, assists, steals, etc...? What other scoring methods are there? Negative points for turnovers, poor defense? And field goal and free throw %s?

3 centers? We just took the thinnest position in the NBA and made it have the most positions in the league. Does this make sense?
At least with the G's and F's we have 2 positions to choose from - this is going to get extremely thin. I'd rather see another G/F spot and one less center.
Anyone on board with this?
jumphook14
20th October 2008 - 06:59 PM
I'm all for it.
But if it stays a 6-team league, C won't be that thin at all

Or we can take out a center and add a bench spot?
jumphook14
20th October 2008 - 07:55 PM
I went ahead and made the change from three centers to two centers and added a bench spot.
Also... As commish I am obligated to fill the league but it has been tough with the lukewarm response. I have sent e-mails to everyone on this thread who hasn't already joined but we're still stuck at 6 managers. Also I posted over in the FB league but only one manager joined up.
The only option I can think of is to make the league public and hope some regular joes join to make it 12. But obviously the downside of this is the chance that inactive managers or noobs might join and throw off the balance. Any thoughts? Suggestions? I can probably get a few guys from some of the FB leagues I play in. Objections?

Guys from the football league are better than the random chance of opening it up public. I'd try that avenue first.

As of now, we're up to 11 managers with the possibility of three more joiners. We were stuck at 8, and since I couldn't get any more guys from the FB league, I posted the league to public. The two public guys that have joined seem to have decent resumes... I also got another friend to join, he is "rastas" and follows the NBA intently. Hope this works out for everybody. See you guys at the draft...

I never realized how thin things get when you have 14 teams in a league. Autodraft put together an interesting squad for me since I forgot to pre-rank in this league before going away. Having the #1 pick was nice but I would have preferred Lebron over CP3 and probably would not have taken Rashard Lewis at the end of round 2.
That all being said, I ended up with a ton of assists from Paul, Calderon, and TJ Ford. Rebounds are going to be thin with Kaman as my only real threat.
Here's how it all went down:

Yeah, havok, when I woke up Sunday morning I was surprised to see that we actually had 14 managers and it made for an interesting draft. You definitely have the upper hand with trade bait (assists) and CP is going to be a monster. Man, I am jealous!
I was happy with my team but probably reached for Sessions and Wilcox. I really liked my first four picks and think that Ray Allen at 67 could bring some value. Granger is like the old Marion with more threes and fewer rebounds, so I think he'll be fine at 11 and Nash at 18 should be okay.
I'm really hoping that Hilario, Blatche and Barnes can give me quality production now that they'll be getting solid minutes.

Nash is a ridiculous steal at 18. I have him in both of my $ leagues and I got him at 7 and 11; I was pretty excited about that!
Regardless of the rumored reduction of minutes (same thing happened last season), Nash will be relied upon more now than ever to get Phoenix into the playoffs. Shaq is just about done as an NBA player and Barnes, Hill, Barbosa, Diaw don't seem like much more than support players for the Suns. Nash should continue with his massive assist and three numbers while keeping up great ratios. Seems like everyone has written him off this year and I see no reason he should be slipping past 5 or 6 in fantasy drafts.
There's also the chance of injury but that goes for nearly every player in the NBA.
BTW, I love Andrew Bynum (HUGE Lakers fan here!) and think the OJ Mayo pick works out real well for you.
